Actually, I think that's very nice of the Vatican, but with all due respect, credit should go where it's really due.  It should go to those doing all the hard work spreading the word, in good ways and in bad ways, but probably more in bad ways than anything else.  Of course you know what I'm talking about.  The Vatican should thank the media for goodness sakes!

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran says Muslims have brought debate about religion into the public sphere

The Vatican has thanked Muslims for bringing God back into the public sphere in Europe.

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, head of the Catholic Church's department for interfaith contacts, said religion was now talked and written about more than ever before in today's Europe.

'It's thanks to the Muslims,' he said in a speech printed in Friday's L'Osservatore Romano, the official daily of the Vatican.

'Muslims, having become a significant minority in Europe, were the ones who demanded space for God in society.'

Vatican officials have long bemoaned the secularisation of Europe, where church attendance has dwindled dramatically in recent decades, and urged a return to its historically Christian roots.

Observations on the economy

I'll know the economy is getting better when the amount of....

(1) ...spam emails going directly into one of my spam folders goes back up to an average of 4000 a month instead of only 500. I have several emails, all seriously deprived of spam mail.

(2) ...junk mail delivered to my house goes back to the usual annoying level instead of only 1 or 2 ads a week from a local Chinese and/or pizza place....(cheap) food is always in demand.

(3) ...credit card applications delivered to my house goes back up to 3 or 4 a week instead of a big goose egg.

(4) ...telemarketers calling me at the most inopportune times to sell me something worthless, pick up the slack and go back to business as usual instead of no phone call at all.

Hey, I'm just saying!  It's not like I'm crying about it.

Fatwa on Lesbianism/Tomboys

The Malaysian term for lesbianism is "Pengkid", which is already considered a crime in Malaysia, but now the Malaysian Department of Islamic Development wants to add "tomboy" to its vague and confusing definition of "pengkid". 

According to these religious loons, women who dress and behave like men are more inclined to develop sexual desires for other women, therefore they must be stopped immediately to prevent them from committing "homosexual crimes".

Q: What is the actual definition of “pengkid”?
A: Pengkid refers to a married woman or maiden whose appearance or image is like that of a man. Although this also includes the dressing of the person and not just the way she behaves, the way of dressing is just one aspect of what makes a pengkid.

A woman may be dressed as a woman, but her behaviour may be like a man, or it might be a combination of this. She might also have a sexual desire for women.

This brings it “hampir” (close) to the practice of les bianism.

Q: Is it close to, or is it actually lesbianism?

A: We can’t say that all people who are pengkid are lesbians. That wouldn’t be right. That’s why I say it is “hampir”.

Hampir means she doesn’t do that act, but she is heading that way. For instance, Islam forbids people from coming close to zina. That means, not only is the act forbidden, but any act that may lead to the actual act is also forbidden.

I believe there is no religion that allows lesbianism or homosexuality. But anything that can drive or lead towards it should also be stopped. So, this is the culture that we are trying to stop.

Actually, we are trying to save these women (from be coming lesbians).

This silly fatwa has no leg to stand on as long as there is some serious doubt amongst Muslim scholars whether homosexuality is prohibited under Islamic law. Some scholars say that there is no mention of homosexuality or lesbianism, but there is mention of "liwat" (violent sodomy), which is forbidden in Islam. Some even argue that since a homosexual relationship/act isn't necessarily violent by definition, there is no reason to make it illegal.

I can't think of a single European country where Eurofascism has not reared its ugly head in one form or another, frequently making the headlines in the last few years.

In most cases it's Muslims, Jews and immigrants who are the main target, but Roma gypsies are increasingly becoming targeted with extreme prejudice and violence as well.
