Iraqi Policewomen Armed Again

 

If Iraq has any hope of democratizing, they will have to allow equal access for women into all of their governmental institutions. And although it's true, their outfits aren't conducive to policework, at least progress is being made.

BAGHDAD -- Police officials said today they had rescinded an order requiring all policewomen to turn in their weapons that had angered women's activists and U.S. officials trying to bring females into the security forces.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry, which oversees police, said the order was revoked after objections were raised both within the ministry and from outside. A memo dated Jan. 17 said the ministry had "reconsidered" and "decided to return all the pistols" to the policewomen.

Col. Saddoun Abulollah said few policewomen had abided by the order in the first place, but that all who did had their weapons given back to them. He described their number as "a handful" of the roughly 1,000 women who have qualified as policewomen since U.S. forces introduced female recruitment efforts in late 2003.

Despite the revocation of the original order, there is no guarantee the women will be able to overcome the hurdles facing them in the police force, said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. David Phillips, who has led the effort to recruit female officers. Phillips, who oversees the U.S. program to assist in training, equipping and developing the Iraqi police, had blamed the original order on the growing influence of religious conservatives in Iraq.

"In my two-plus years in Iraq, I have never seen any of the over 1,000-plus female Iraqi police performing law enforcement duty," he said today in an e-mail. "They are relegated to administrative roles and used as searchers of other females" entering government or other protected buildings.

Phillips has said that many of the women he recruited and guided through the police academy had come to him after being hired at the Interior Ministry, complaining that they were being prevented from working as police officers. Now, Phillips said he believes "only a portion" of the original female recruits still are employed at the ministry.

The ministry said it does not have the number because it does not categorize its police officers by gender.

Critics of the original move had noted that it came at a time of heightened threats from female suicide bombers, who normally would be searched by female officers but who could pass through checkpoints undetected if there were no women officers deployed to frisk them.

First Public Saudi Female Soccer Match

A female soccer match was played in Saudi Arabia. Al Watan newspaper reported that two female teams from Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University in Khobar and Al Yamamah College in Riyadh played against each other on Wednesday evening.

Although the match was held at a 35,000 capacity stadium in al-Dammam, no men were allowed in the stadium, and the referee and her linesman, as well as the fans, were also female.

Malaysian Buddhists Lose Conversion Case

KUALA LUMPUR — A Malaysian court on Tuesday rejected a petition to have a dead man declared a Buddhist after he was buried as a Muslim in the latest interfaith dispute to rock this multiethnic but largely Muslim nation.

Relatives of the late Gan Eng Gor had asked the High Court in southern Seremban state to reverse a decision by an Islamic Shariah court that declared him a Muslim. But the High Court rejected the plea, saying it had no jurisdiction in the matter, the family's lawyer, Tan Foong Luen, told The Associated Press.

The deceased, an ethnic Chinese, was given an Islamic burial last Thursday by his eldest son, a Muslim convert, who won custody of the body after getting the Shariah Court's approval. The rest of the family insisted the man had never converted, saying he had suffered two strokes and couldn't even speak at the time of the alleged conversion.

Where political leaders are idolized as if they're something godly, their sainthood is legally shrouded and codified, their holiness made untouchable even after they're long dead and gone and insulting them is not only deemed blasphemous, but also punishable by law. 

Professor convicted of insulting Ataturk

ANKARA, Turkey --

A political science professor was convicted Monday of insulting the revered founder of modern Turkey and given a 15-month suspended prison sentence, a news report said.

Atilla Yayla, a professor at Gazi University in Ankara and head of the Association for Liberal Thinking, was convicted of insulting the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Dogan news agency said.

Presidents, secretaries of state and special envoys have all tried to broker peace in the Middle East.

Now a group of 27 high schoolers from across the [Denver, Colorado] metro area - equally divided among Muslims, Jews and Christians - will fly to Israel in June in an effort to bring a measure of peace to the region.

It's a heck of an after-school assignment.

"I think it will make us more well-rounded, and I think it will show us that life is more complicated than walking down to McDonald's and grabbing a double cheeseburger," says Omar Murib, a 17-year-old junior at Douglas County High School, who is Muslim.

"You've got to start somewhere, and we're taking baby steps toward (solving) the war, guns, bullets and achieving peace."

Anne Frank postcard won't be withdrawn

The distribution in the Netherlands of a free postcard depicting Anne Frank wearing a Palestinian scarf will not be stopped, according to editor-in-chief Pascale Bosboom of Boomerang publishers.

She regards the card as a small work of art which encourages people to reflect on a peaceful solution for Israel and the Palestinians. However the Dutch Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel (CIDI) considers the card to be ‘a tasteless rewriting of history' and is calling for halt to its further distribution.
