The situation facing Palestinian refugees is tragic and just wrong on many accounts. International law has been changed, and the weirdest policies have been enacted, in order to warehouse Palestinians to keep them as a political weapon against the establishment of the State of Israel. It's a level of depravity that is unmatched in the refugee community.
For example, did you know that nowhere in the world are the offspring of refugees also considered refugees except for Palestinians? Everywhere else in the world, children of refugees are given opportunities for citizenship so they can work, go to school, and have opportunities to improve their own lives and the lives of their communities. Not so for Palestinians. For them, generations are forcibly made to be refugees. Only with Palestinians will generation after generation never have the chance to live their lives outside a camp. The reason? Politics.
And this isn't about Israel and the Palestinian "right to return." Israel cannot allow all the Palestinian refugees back into Israel. It wouldn't be ethical or just. Not all refugees have such a right, and it's impossible to distinguish which ones do.
You see, the definition of Palestinian refugees are those who had been residents of Palestine between June 1946 and May 1948 and who had lost their homes and means of livelihood, as a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict. Why would the UN come up with that figure -- 2 years residency? The only reason is to accommodate a large number of people, which certainly suggests that there was a lot of immigration by Arabs at the same time as there was by Jews. Aside from that, however, the point is that the great grandchildren of those ethnic Arabs who lived in Palestine for 23 months, along with the others, are refugees and are totally warehoused in enclosed, squalid camps, without passports or rights. Meanwhile, Palestinians are denied their civil rights in every single Arab League nation. And that includes those who are not refugees.
So, are we really supposed to believe that those who abuse the human and civil rights of an entire community in fact do so on behalf of their civil and human rights? It makes no sense. Anti-Israeli politics are over concerns for power, not humanity. And, ironically, Palestinians are the biggest victims of it.
p.s. Israel never put one Arab into a refugee camp.
